FIAT, an acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino – which translates to Italian Automobiles Factory, Turin – is an Italian car manufacturer which is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Fiat’s history can be traced to 1899, when the first Fiat automobile was produced.
The European Car of the Year award has been awarded twelve times to the Fiat Group over the last forty years, more than any other manufacturer. Nine of these awards were won by Fiat branded models. They are also known for producing efficient vehicles with low emissions and have done significant development of electric cars.
Fiat’s current U.S. model lineup consists of the 500X crossover, the 500 super compact which is also sold as an Abarth performance version and the 500e full-electric city car, the 500L station wagon, and the upcoming Mazda Miata-based 124 Spider sports roadster.
Fiat branded cars are built in several locations around the world, with the largest production center outside of Italy being Brazil, where Fiat is the market leader. There are also factories located in Argentina, Poland, and Mexico, and licensed manufacture of its products in several other countries. It also has alliances and joint ventures in numerous countries around the world including Serbia, France, Turkey, India, and China.
Fiat has also manufactured railway engines and carriages, military vehicles, farm tractors, and aircraft. Fiat has acquired numerous other automakers in its history including Lancia in 1968, a significant amount of shares of Ferrari in 1969, Alfa Romeo in 1986, Maserati in 1993, and full ownership of Chrysler Group LLC in 2014. Fiat Group currently produces vehicles under twelve brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari, Fiat, Fiat Professional, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati, Ram Trucks, and SRT. In 2013, Fiat (together with Chrysler) was the second largest European automaker by volumes produced, and the seventh in the world ahead of Honda, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Suzuki, Renault, and Daimler AG.
Fiat has also had some motorsports success, mostly in the World Rally Championship. The Fiat 131 Abarth was a very successful Group 4 rally car which won the World Rally Championship three times: in 1977, 1978, and 1980. The Lancia Stratos was also extremely successful in the legendary Group B rally category in the 1980s, and in the 2000s, Fiat Punto compact cars have also enjoyed success in the Italian Rally Championship and FIA European Rally Championship.
