Saab Automobile AB is a Swedish premium car manufacturer, founded in 1945 when Saab AB, an aerospace and military company, launched a project to design a small automobile. The first production Saab automobile, the Saab 92, was launched in 1949. Saab Automobile AB was restructured into an independent company in 1989, but their most well-known slogan, “Born From Jets”, still takes pride in their aerospace heritage.
General Motors took 50% ownership of Saab in 1989 for $600 million, and acquired the remaining 50% for $125 million in the year 2000, making Saab Automobile AB wholly owned by GM. In 2010, GM sold Saab Automobile AB to the Dutch automobile manufacturer Spyker Cars N.V.
Saab has suffered financial troubles in recent years, struggling to avoid insolvency through 2011 and petitioning for bankruptcy shortly after a Chinese consortium was blocked by GM from completing purchase of the company. On June 13, 2012, it was announced that a newly formed company called National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) had bought Saab Automobile, and Saab cars once again began production in late 2013, although at a much smaller scale.
Saab vehicles are known for being quirky and unique. Their driving dynamics have also been highly praised by journalists and owners, but they are also known for having questionable reliability and complexity.
Saab currently does not have any production models in the U.S. market, but NEVS plans to eventually resume operations on a global scale. Saab’s past models have included SUVs, crossovers, wagons, sedans, and coupes, many recent models of which shared platforms and technology with GM cars.
