muffler repair

Muffler Repair is more than just a muffler. From time to time while driving around Phoenix you may hear cars or trucks that sound like they need a new muffler, but there could be more going on. Your vehicle’s exhaust system has three main functions: to safely get hot exhaust gas from the engine out through the tailpipe, to remove harmful pollutants and control your emissions, and to muffle your vehicle’s engine noise.

Any many people know exhaust gas is poisonous. You don’t want to be breathing it while driving. For example, carbon monoxide, one of the most abundant particles in your exhaust gas, can be deadly. That’s why you should never run your engine in a closed garage. If you have a bad enough leak in your exhaust system, exhaust gas could get into your passenger compartment and cause illness and or cause you to pass out and cause a serious accident.

If you smell exhaust in your vehicle, roll down your windows and get it inspected immediately. You may smell or see exhaust coming from the engine compartment or under the vehicle instead of from your tailpipe if you have a leak. Sometimes the sound of an exhaust leak is loud and obvious. Sometimes it’s hard to hear, or goes away as your engine warms up. In this case, it could be a small crack or bad fitting that leaks when cold but seals again as the metal heats up and expands.

Exhaust gases contain a number of harmful, poisonous pollutants and particulates. Your vehicle’s catalytic converter traps some of these particles before they can be released into the atmosphere. But, like any part, catalytic converters eventually wear out and will need to be replaced. Because they contain precious metals, they can be expensive, so you should do your best to prolong their life by keeping your fuel system and air filter clean. These components need to be tested with an emissions test from time to time, and you will not be able to register your vehicle if it fails.
