The Saturn Corporation is a registered trademark of General Motors established on January 7, 1985 and marketed as a “different kind of car company”. It operated somewhat independently from GM for a time with its own assembly plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, unique models, and a separate dealership network.
The Saturn brand was discontinued by GM on October 31, 2010, after all new production being halted on October 7, 2009.
Saturn was born from a “revolutionary new, small-car project” in June 1982. The first Saturn demonstration vehicle was revealed in late 1984, and the Saturn Corporation was officially founded on January 7, 1985. The Saturn Concept Car, released in the mid 1980’s, was originally planned to be released under one of GM’s existing brands, but in the late 1980’s GM decided to found Saturn as its own brand, with production of the Saturn SC and Saturn SL starting in 1990 as early 1991 model year vehicles. GM had plans for a coupe, a wagon, and even an SUV, but the first Saturn SUV, the Vue, did not appear until model year 2002.
Saturn has received several awards for its performance, design, engineering, and value, but the brand was never known as a high-quality or desirable car. Some of its trademarks included affordability, unique design, an emphasis on ergonomics and usability, and plastic body panels. The brand is perhaps best described as quirky.
Saturn cars, although affordable and not particularly desirable, have never been known as unreliable.
