Chrysler is an American car manufacturer headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan and owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, headquartered in London, England. Chrysler is considered one of the “Big Three” American automakers and sells vehicles worldwide under the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram brands. It also sells highly tuned performance versions of several vehicles from its different brands under its SRT division. In 2014, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles U.S. LLC was the seventh biggest automaker in the world.
The Chrysler Corporation was founded by Walter Chrysler in 1925, and acquired the Fargo truck company and the Dodge Brothers Company in 1928, and created the now defunct Plymouth and DeSoto automobile brands.
Chrysler’s expansion to Europe came in the 1960s, with Chrysler Europe being formed from the acquisition of French, British, and Spanish countries. However, by 1979 Chrysler was on the verge of bankruptcy and was forced to withdraw from Europe. Lee Iacocca was made CEO of Chrysler, and is credited with returning the company to profitability by the 1980s. In 1987, Chrysler acquired the dying American Motors Corporation (AMC), which still owned the profitable Jeep brand.
1998, Chrysler merged with German automaker Daimler-Benz Automotive Group and formed DaimlerChrysler, which brought much of Mercedes-Benz’s research and development to Chrysler. In 2007, Chrysler was sold to Cerberus Capital Management and renamed Chrysler LLC. On April 30, 2009, Chrysler filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and only managed to remain in business through a U.S. government bailout.
Today, Chrysler products have a better reputation than the previous decades, with its current flagship model that offers power, style, and luxury, the Chrysler 300, the smaller entry level Chrysler 200 which offers a good value, and the Town & Country minivan. These are the only 3 models currently in Chrysler’s lineup.
