GMC is an American automobile division of the American manufacturer General Motors (GM) that primarily builds trucks and utility vehicles. It manufactures and sells pickup and commercial trucks, SUVs, buses, vans, and military vehicles marked in North America and the Middle East.
GMC’s roots are in the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company, which was established by Max Grabowsky on December 22, 1901. Rapid developed some of the earliest commercial trucks. In 1909, General Motors purchased Rapid, forming the basis of the General Motors Truck Company, from which the GMC Truck brand name was derived. The Reliance Motor Car Company was also purchased by GM in 1909, and the two companies were merged in 1911. The marque “GMC Truck” first appeared on vehicles exhibited at the New York International Auto Show in 1912. GMC later became a distinct brand within the GM corporation.
GMC currently manufactures SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, light-duty trucks, and medium duty trucks. In the past, GMC also produced fire trucks, ambulances, heavy-duty trucks, military vehicles, motorhomes, and transit buses.
The GMC brand stands for toughness and is an important part of the GM brand identity.
Many of GMC’s models are based on other GM models or share the same platforms; for example the Savana is based on the Chevrolet Express, the Sierra is based on the Chevrolet Silverado, the Yukon XL is based on the Chevrolet Suburban, and the Yukon is based on the Chevrolet Tahoe.
