Mitsubishi Motors is a multinational automotive manufacturer headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. In 2011, Mitsubishi was the sixth biggest Japanese automaker and sixteenth biggest worldwide by production. It is part of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries group.
Mitsubishi has historically had a legacy producing successful rally and sports cars such as the Pajero, Lancer Evolution, and Montero, but recently has been facing dire economic troubles. They have since been forced to end production in Australia, Europe, and North America after failing to turn a profit, and as of today their future remains uncertain.
Mitsubishi Motors first began to form in 1917, when the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., introduced the Mitsubishi Model A, Japan’s first production automobile. It was an entirely hand built seven seat sedan based on the Fiat Tipo 3, but it was discontinued in 1921 after only 22 had been built due to high price.
In 1934, Mitsubishi Shipbuilding merged with the Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. to form Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which was at the time the largest private company in Japan. By 1937, they had developed the PX33, a prototype sedan for military use. It was the first Japanese-built passenger car with full-time four-wheel drive.
By the 1960s, with Japan’s economy improving, Mitsubishi began to build production cars for volume sale to the public, and by the late 1960s their output was over 75,000 cars per year.
On April 22, 1970, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation was formed as a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries under the leadership of Tomio Kubo from the Mitsubishi aircraft division.
In the 1970s, Mitsubishi began to work with Chrysler, and they produced several successful cars together including the Mitsubishi Eclipse / Plymouth Talon / Chrysler Laser, the Mitsubishi Starion / Chrysler Conquest, and the Mitsubishi 3000GT / Dodge Stealth. They have also had a 30-year partnership with Jackie Chan, being featured in several of his movies.
Mitsubishi Motors went public in 1988, ending its status Japan’s only privately held auto manufacturer.
Mitsubishi’s current model lineup consists of the Outlander crossover, the Lancer sedan, the i-Miev electric subcompact car, and the Mirage subcompact car.
