Audi Automotive Group is a German automobile manufacturer that produces luxury automobiles. Audi is headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany, and has nine production facilities worldwide. Audi has been 99.55% owned by Volkswagen Group since 1966, following the purchase of its predecessor, Auto Union, from Daimler-Benz.
The company name is derived from the Latin translation of the last name of founder August Horch. Horch means “listen” in German, which translates into Latin as “audi”. The four rings in Audi’s logo each represent one of the four car companies that joined together to create Audi’s predecessor, Auto Union. Audi’s official slogan is Vorsprung dutch Technik, meaning “Advancement through Technology” in German, but since 2007 Audi USA has used the slogan “Truth in Engineering”. Audi is among the best-selling luxury automobile brands in the world.
Up until around 1980, the Audi brand image was a conservative one, and even seen as a “grandfather’s car”. But everything changed in 1980, when an Audi performance rally racing car was introduced. The legendary “Audi Quattro”, a turbocharged all-wheel drive coupe which was proposed by chassis engineer Jorg Bensinger and developed from Volkswagen’s military vehicle, gave Audi a solid legacy as a pioneer of automotive technology. The original Quattro, commonly called the Ur-Quattro (the prefix Ur- meaning original in German), was also the first German large-scale production vehicle to feature permanent all-wheel drive through a center differential. The Ur-Quattro rally cars, of which only a few were produced and all hand-built by a single team, was a prominent winner in its class and a great success, proving the viability of all-wheel drive race cars and giving Audi a motorsports legacy.
Audi today continues to enjoy great success and produces several sports models including the RS trim levels of its product line, the TT sports coupe, and the R8 entry-level exotic car. From 2002 to 2003, Audi headed the Audi Brand Group, a subdivision of Volkswagen AG consisting of Lamborghini, Audi, and SEAT, and was key to developing the Lamborghini Gallardo.
In 2015, Audi’s image was somewhat tarnished by the Volkswagen emissions testing scandal, with the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5 models being affected. Audi promised to quickly find a technical solution and upgrade the cars so they can function within emissions regulations. Ulrich Hackenberg, the head of research and development at Audi, was suspended in relation to the scandal. Despite widespread media coverage about the scandal through the month of September, Audi reported that U.S. sales for the month had increased by 16.2%.
