Mazda Motor Corporation is a Japanese automaker based in Hiroshima, Japan. They are known for producing unique cars with sporty handling characteristics and exciting styling, while providing good value and average to good reliability.
In 2007, Mazda produced almost 1.3 million vehicles for global sales, and they have been the fifteenth biggest automaker by volume worldwide since 2011.
Mazda was founded in 1920 as Tokyo Kogyo, and initially produced weapons for the Japanese military. After WWII ended, the company started producing the 3-wheeled Mazda-Go autorickshaw in 1931. They first started producing passenger vehicles in the early 1960s, with the Mazda R360 in 1960, followed by the Mazda Carol in 1962.
Mazda is also known for being extremely innovative, and is the most well-known automaker to embrace the Wankel rotary engine, a different type of gasoline-powered engine than most cars use.
Some of Mazda’s most legendary models include the rotary powered RX-7 sports cars and the lightweight MX-5 sports roadster, which is still produced today. The MX-5 is credited with bringing the spirit of classic British sports roadsters to the masses.
Mazda’s current U.S. market offerings are the Mazda2 small city car, the Mazda3 compact hatchback/sedan, the Mazda5 small minivan, the Mazda6 midsize sedan, the MX-5 roadster, the CX-5 compact crossover, and the CX-9 full size crossover.
