Mini is a British automotive brand which specializes in small cars and is currently owned by BMW. The original Mini was a line of iconic British small cars manufactured by the British Motor Corporation from 1959 until 2000, with performance versions using the name Cooper due to a partnership with racing legend John Cooper. The original two door Mini was produced until 2000, while development of its successor began in 1995 and the “new Mini” was launched in 2001.
Mini was originally a product of the British Motor Corporation, which merged with Leyland Motors in 1968 to form British Leyland. Mini became its own brand shortly after, in 1969. British Leyland was broken up in the 1980s, with Mini falling under the Rover Group, which was acquired by British Aerospace in 1988. In 1994, Rover Group was acquired by BMW, who broke it up in 2000, retaining only the Mini brand. All current Mini models besides the Countryman and Paceman are assembled at BMW’s Plant Oxford in Cowley, England. The Countryman and Paceman are assembled by Magna Steyr in Austria.
The original Mini is considered an icon of the 1960s, with George Harrison of The Beatles owning one which was featured in their “Magical Mystery Tour”, as well as other prominent figures owning or endorsing it. Its space-saving front wheel drive layout allowed 80% of the area of the car’s floor-pan to be used for passengers and luggage, and influenced a generation of car companies. It is considered by many to be the British equivalent to the Volkswagen Beetle. In 1999, the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century, behind only the Ford Model T.
Mini has a motorsports legacy, especially in rally, with many teams preferring Minis despite their low power because of their affordability, aftermarket support, light weight, and superb handling. The original Mini Cooper S won the Monte Carlo Rally on three occasions: 1964, 1965, and 1967. Mini has also been participating in the World Rally Championship since 2011 through the Prodrive WRC Team, formerly known as the Mini WRC Team.
The current Mini model lineup includes the Cooper hardtop, hatchback, coupe, or convertible, the Clubman wagon, the Countryman five-door crossover, and the Paceman three-door crossover (based on the Countryman).
