Subaru is the automobile manufacturing division of the Japanese transportation conglomerate Fuji Heavy Industries and the twenty-second biggest automaker by production worldwide as of 2012.
The name Subaru, and its logo, is taken from the Japanese name for Pleiades star cluster M45, also called “The Seven Sisters”. Tradition says that one of the stars is invisible, which is why there are only six stars in the Subaru logo. This also pays homage to the companies that merged to create Fuji Heavy Industries.
Subaru cars have been popular among a dedicated core of buyers who value all wheel drive and off-road performance, making them extremely popular in snowy areas such as New England. Subaru has been referred to by many people as the official car of Vermont.
Subaru is known for its use of the boxer engine layout, which is much less common than the standard V or inline cylinder configurations. The boxer engine is when cylinders are laid flat at a 180 degree angle, with a single crankshaft in the middle. Since 1972, most Subaru models have used a Symmetrical All Wheel Drive drivetrain layout, with a boxer engine and all wheel drive becoming standard in North American market Subaru’s, with the only exception being the BRZ, codeveloped with Toyota as the Scion/Toyota FR-S/GT86. Subaru also offers turbocharged versions of several of its models such as the Impreza WRX and Legacy 2.5GT.
Subaru has also been extremely successful in motorsports, primarily in the World Rally Championship with modified versions of the Impreza and, in other rally series, the Legacy. However, on December 16, 2006, Fuji Heavy Industries announced that Subaru would no longer compete in the WRC, both because of the economic downturn and because they felt that they had already achieved their sporting and marketing objectives with their legendary WRC record. Fuji Heavy Industries CEO Ikuo Mori said that the possibility of Subaru returning to WRC in the future is not zero, but is not planned in the near future. Subaru vehicles are still extremely popular among other rally teams, and Subaru Rally Team USA is still an active participant in the Red Bull Global Rallycross series.
Subaru’s current U.S. lineup includes the BRZ sports coupe, the Impreza sports sedan, the more mature Legacy sports sedan, the Forester wagon, the Crosstek crossover, and the Outback crossover.
